1886, a Boston policeman came to Niagara Falls with a challenge that many believed was impossible.
Not to go over the Falls.
Not to walk across the gorge.
But to survive the violent Whirlpool Rapids of the Niagara River.
His name was William J. Kendall.
And unlike many who tested themselves against Niagara, he actually succeeded.
By the late 1800s, the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls were already feared for their speed and power.
The water twists violently through the narrow gorge, creating waves, currents, and surges strong enough to overpower even experienced rivermen.
Most people looked at the rapids and saw certain disaster.
Kendall saw a challenge.
On August 22, 1886, the Boston police officer entered the river wearing nothing more than swimming trunks and a cork life preserver.
No barrel.
No protective capsule.
No safety harness.
Just himself against the river.
As spectators watched from the riverbanks, Kendall was pulled into the chaos of the rapids below Niagara Falls.
For several tense moments, he disappeared among the crashing water and heavy spray.
But then he emerged farther downstream... alive.
Against the odds, Kendall became the first person known to successfully swim the Whirlpool Rapids and survive.
Remarkably, he escaped with only minor cuts and bruises.
Considering the force of the river, that alone seemed almost unbelievable!
The story of William J. Kendall stands out because there was almost nothing separating him from the river itself.
Many Niagara daredevils relied on barrels or specially built devices.
Kendall relied almost entirely on his own ability... and a cork life preserver.
Standing near the Whirlpool Rapids today, it’s difficult to imagine willingly entering that water.
Which is exactly why this story still surprises people more than a century later.
Most visitors focus on the Falls themselves.
But some of Niagara’s most incredible stories happened in the river below.
On our Niagara Falls tours, you’ll experience the power of the gorge, the rapids, and the places where these unforgettable moments unfolded.
