Where the River Takes a Turn

A short distance downriver from the Falls, the Niagara River does something unexpected: it makes a sharp 90-degree turn. Right at that bend, deep in the Niagara Gorge along the Canada–U.S. border, is where the Niagara Whirlpool forms.

What You’ll Experience When We Stop Here

When we stop here, you’ll be standing on the Canadian side, looking down into the gorge at the swirling water below.

This is actually the best place to view it. Because of the way the river bends, the Canadian side gives you a clear, direct view into the Whirlpool without having to hike or go out of your way.

It’s a quieter stop compared to the Falls, and most people are surprised by just how powerful the river looks here. The water doesn’t rush straight through. It twists, turns, and circles in a way that almost looks controlled, but definitely isn’t.

What’s Really Happening Down There

The Whirlpool exists because the river is being forced through that sharp bend. After rushing down from the Falls, all that water suddenly has to change direction, and it can’t do it smoothly. Instead, it starts to spin, creating the circular motion you see from above.

What makes this even more interesting is that the direction of the Whirlpool isn’t always the same.

When water is diverted from the river for hydroelectric power generation, less water flows into this section. When that happens, the Whirlpool can actually slow down, stop, or even reverse direction for a short time.

It’s one of those rare places where you’re seeing both natural forces and human engineering affecting the river at the same time.

Why We Stop Here on Our Tour

A lot of visitors to Niagara never make it past the Falls, so they miss this completely different side of the river.

We stop here because it adds something the Falls alone can’t. It gives you a better sense of how powerful the Niagara River really is, and how the landscape shapes what the water does.

It’s also one of the best viewpoints along the gorge, and one of those places that tends to catch people off guard in a good way.

Included in Your Tour

A stop at the Niagara Whirlpool is included in your $77 + tax Chariots of Fire Niagara Falls day tour.
