The Spanish Aerocar: A Ride Designed Over 100 Years Ago

Whirlpool Aerocar over the Niagara River

As we approach the Whirlpool Aero Car, often called the Spanish Aerocar, you’re looking at one of Niagara’s most unique and long-running attractions.

Operating since August 8, 1916, this cable car has been carrying passengers high above the Niagara River for over a century, without a single accident or injury.

The Aerocar was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and built in Bilbao, Spain before being shipped here to Niagara.

Suspended from six heavy steel cables, the car travels between two points on the Canadian side of the river. The lightweight aluminum cabin holds up to 35 passengers and moves slowly across the gorge, giving everyone a chance to take in the view.

Despite its age, the system has only required a few major upgrades over the years (in 1961, 1967, and 1984), a testament to its original design.

High Above the Whirlpool

The Aerocar travels about 200 feet (61 metres) above the river, moving at a gentle speed of around 7 km/h (4.3 mph).

Below, you’ll see the powerful Niagara Whirlpool, a massive swirling basin formed where the river makes a sharp 90-degree turn. Covering roughly 60 acres, it’s one of the most fascinating natural features along the Niagara River.

From the car, you can also spot the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant in the distance, along with fishermen casting from the rocky shoreline far below.

Crossing the Border… Without a Passport

Here’s what makes this ride especially unique.

Even though the Whirlpool Aero Car starts and ends on the Canadian side, it actually crosses the international border multiple times during the trip.

Because of a bend in the Niagara River, the car passes briefly over United States territory, then back into Canada, and does the same thing again on the return journey.

In total, you cross the border four times during the ride; into the U.S. and back to Canada on the way over, and then into the U.S. and back again on the way back.

But here’s the key part: you never land in the United States.

So even though you cross the border in the air, you do not need a passport, since you remain on Canadian boarding and landing points the entire time.

Why We Point Out the Spanish Aerocar on Our Tour

The Spanish Aerocar is a perfect example of how Niagara blends natural beauty with engineering ingenuity.

It offers a completely different perspective of the river, one that most visitors wouldn’t otherwise experience, and adds a unique twist with its mid-air border crossing.
