By 2012, daredevil stunts at Niagara Falls had largely become part of history.
Then Nik Wallenda arrived and brought tightrope walking back to Niagara in front of a worldwide audience.
On June 15, 2012, the 33-year-old crossed the Niagara River Gorge on a tightrope stretched near the Horseshoe Falls, closer to the Falls than any previous tightrope walker.
Unlike earlier performers who crossed farther downriver, Wallenda walked directly beside the mist, roar, and power of Niagara itself.
The crossing began on Goat Island in New York and ended on the Canadian side of the gorge.
The specially installed cable stretched roughly 550 metres (1,800 feet) across the river and measured only about five centimetres wide.
And unlike many of Niagara’s earlier daredevils, Wallenda wasn’t performing in silence.
As he carefully made his way across the wire, he spoke with his father through a headset and even answered questions from ABC broadcasters during the walk.
Millions watched the event live on television.
By the time Wallenda made his crossing, Niagara Falls stunts were no longer something people could simply attempt on their own.
Because of the risks involved, he needed official approval from government agencies on both the Canadian and American sides of the river before the event could happen.
And after completing the crossing, he even had to stop and show his passport to Canadian border officials upon arriving in Canada.
Only at Niagara Falls could a tightrope walk end with a border crossing.
The story of Nik Wallenda feels different from many of Niagara’s older daredevils.
This wasn’t a secret stunt or an illegal attempt.
It was carefully planned, internationally televised, and watched by millions around the world.
But even with modern equipment and approvals, standing beside Niagara Falls today makes it easy to understand why this walk captured so much attention.
The height, the mist, the wind, and the roar of the river still make it feel almost unreal.
Photos and videos can only capture so much.
Standing beside Niagara Falls, hearing the roar and seeing the mist rise from the gorge, is something entirely different.
