Fort York National Historic Site: Toronto’s War of 1812 Fort

Fort York with Toronto in the background

As we leave downtown Toronto, we pass Fort York, one of the city’s most important historic sites and home to the largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings in Canada.

The fort was first established in 1793 after Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe selected York (now Toronto) as the capital of Upper Canada. Protected by Toronto’s natural harbour and positioned farther from the American border than other settlements, the location was considered ideal for defense.

Fort York is best known for its role in the Battle of York during the War of 1812. On April 27, 1813, American naval and military forces attacked the town from Lake Ontario and overran the fort. Before retreating, British forces detonated the fort’s powder magazine, causing a massive explosion that killed and wounded many American soldiers, including General Zebulon Pike.

During the occupation, much of the fort and the nearby settlement of York, including the original Parliament Buildings, was burned. Later that same year, the British returned and rebuilt the fortifications, many of which still stand today.

Fort York continued to serve military purposes well into the 20th century, including during both World Wars. Today, visitors can walk through the historic grounds, explore original buildings, and experience demonstrations and exhibits that bring Toronto’s early history to life.

How does Fort York relate to a Niagara Falls tour?

As we depart the modern skyline of Toronto on our way to Niagara Falls, Fort York National Historic Site offers a reminder that the city began as a military settlement long before it became Canada’s largest urban center. It’s one of the landmarks that connects Toronto’s present to its earliest beginnings.
