Annie Edson Taylor

In 1901, at the age of 63, Annie Edson Taylor — a widowed schoolteacher from Bay City, Michigan — became the first person on record to survive a trip over Niagara Falls.

On October 24, 1901, inside a custom-built oak barrel padded for protection and weighted with a 100-pound anvil to keep it upright, she was sealed in and sent over the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. After plunging nearly 57 metres (187 feet) through thundering water and crushing currents, her barrel was recovered on the Canadian side of the river.

Amazingly, Annie survived the fall with only minor injuries. When she emerged, shaken but alive, she reportedly declared, “No one ought ever try this again.”

Despite her historic achievement, fame did not bring fortune. Annie spent her later years in Niagara Falls, New York, selling postcards and sharing her story with visitors. Financial struggles followed her throughout her life, and she died in 1921 at the age of 82. She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery alongside several other Niagara daredevils who followed in her wake.

Her story marks the beginning of Niagara Falls’ long and controversial history of daredevils — individuals drawn to the power, risk, and notoriety of conquering one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.
