More recently, 33 year old Nik Wallenda did the tightrope walk across the Niagara River Gorge on June 15th, 2012. He crossed at the widest part of the river, close to the Horseshoe Falls, from Goat Island in the US to the Canadian side. This is the closest any tightrope walker has gotten to Niagara Falls. All of the others performed their stunts downriver form the Falls.

The only woman to cross the Niagara River gorge on tightrope Maria Spelterina.

Maria was born in Italy on July 7, 1853. On July 8, 1876 as part of a celebration of the U.S. Centennial, the 23 year old crossed the Niagara River, just north of the lower suspension bridge. Amongst her many stunts was to do the tightrope walk with peach baskets on her feet, wearing her flamboyant costume and hat. She also crossed with her hands and feet shackled in chains, and on another occasion, blindfolded.

Jean Francois Gravelet, better known as the "Great Blondin" was born on 28 February 1824 at St Omer, PasdeCalais, France.

In 1859, this 35 year old Frenchman , crossed the Niagara River gorge on tightrope a total of 21 times. He walked across, ran across, crossed in the dark, crossed on a bicycle and crossed on stilts.
