Niagara Falls is not only rich in natural beauty and breathtaking scenery, it is also steeped in history and tales of great adventure.  One such story is that of The Old Scow or Old Barge.

The terrifying tale took place on the afternoon of August 6, 1918.

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and physicist. Tesla is best known for his work on the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity system.

Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on Febuary 11, 1847. Edison began his career as an inventor in Newark, New Jersey, giving him the nick name "The Wizard of Menlo Park". Edison is accredited with inventing the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He held 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

Located on the US side of the Niagara River, this mighty power plant collapsed on June 7, 1956. A small seepage started in the back wall which grew until the floor was buckling by 4 p.m. Within an hour the entire back wall collapsed. With a thunderous roar, hundreds of the tons of rock, rubble and concrete fell and destroyed two thirds of the power station. The 40 men working in the plant ran for their lives but one didn't make it out. The plant was demolished as it fell down the deep gorge into the Niagara River.

After the Honeymoon Bridge collapsed in 1938 due to the ice buildup on the Niagara River, a new bridge was needed to connect the cities of Niagara Falls, New York, United States, and Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. During their 1939 royal tour of Canada, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth dedicated the site of the Rainbow Bridge. Construction of the single arch bridge started on May 4, 1940. To prevent the new bridge from suffering the same consequences as the Honeymoon Bridge, the bridges abutments are 50 feet (15m) above the water.
